Fu-Go on Radiolab

After posting about the American bombing of Osaka twice yesterday (this isn’t a military history site, I swear), I opened up my podcasting app and noticed that the latest episode of Radiolab is on a related subject that I had never heard of before: the Japanese bombing of the U.S. mainland… using unmanned and unpowered balloons released from the coast of Japan which rode the jet stream all the way across the Pacific Ocean. These bombs were called “Fu-Go” (Japanese: ふ号兵器).

Go have a listen to the Radiolab episode on Fu-Go and be sure to check out the related photo gallery. Cora Connor’s story in the last half of the episode is heart-breaking. Imagine not being about to speak about something like that for 40 years.
